Concurrent House Resolution
H.C.R. 305
House concurrent resolution honoring Mary Fell of Underhill for her outstanding record of community service
Offered by: Representatives Frank of Underhill and Symington of Jericho
Whereas, Mary Fell is an extremely caring person who has contributed hundreds, if not thousands, of hours in service to her community, and
Whereas, especially noteworthy is her long-standing volunteering, in the towns of Jericho and Underhill, for the Meals on Wheels program, and
Whereas, the duration of her service in this capacity is undocumented but commonly told local lore is that she has performed this work forever, and
Whereas, in the distant past, five area churches scheduled the drivers for the program with one church assigned the responsibility for each of the five weekdays, and
Whereas, under this former arrangement, Mary Fell was the once‑a‑week scheduler for the United Church of Underhill, and
Whereas, her dedication and enthusiasm as her own church’s representative in the scheduling consortium resulted in her assumption of this administrative responsibility in its entirety, and
Whereas, Mary Fell’s duties soon broadened to include serving as the always available substitute driver when a scheduled driver canceled unexpectedly at the last minute or forgot to appear at the Meal on Wheels’s kitchen door, and
Whereas, she also assumed the job of orientation guide showing new drivers the route and accompanying them on their rounds until the drivers familiarized themselves with the route, and
Whereas, Mary Fell’s remarkable volunteer record at Meals on Wheels is not the sole example of her service to the community, and
Whereas, the town of Underhill also benefited from her efforts in more direct ways as she was a member of the town’s zoning board for many years and gained extensive knowledge of local property values during her multiple terms as an Underhill lister, and
Whereas, beyond these elected offices, the staff at the Underhill town hall knew they could always call on Mary Fell when an extra person was needed to assist with miscellaneous tasks, and
Whereas, attendees of sugar‑on‑snow parties at the Audubon society’s Huntington campus became familiar with Mary Fell as she was a perennial volunteer at these wintertime events, and
Whereas, she has decided the time has arrived to conclude her legendary tenure as the driver-scheduler extraordinaire at the Jericho-Underhill Meals on Wheels program, and
Whereas, while other individuals will assume her duties, Mary Fell is a unique volunteer who in reality is irreplaceable, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly is pleased to honor Mary Fell for her outstanding record of community service, and be it further
Resolved: That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Mary Fell in Underhill.
